  27. 1. Introduction
  28. ================
  29. 1.1 General Information
  30. -----------------------
  31.     Release 2 and higher of the Diamond Professional Line CD adds support
  32.     for the following new software features: 
  33.     
  34.     -DirectX3, Open GL, and HEIDI for Win95
  35.  
  36.     For a complete overview of the contents of this CD, please refer to the
  37.     HTML file "Docs\Cdcont.htm".
  38.  
  39. IMPORTANT!
  40.     Read this README file and all the documentation
  41.     supplied BEFORE you continue the installation.
  42.     These documents contain useful information that will help you
  43.     complete the install procedure as quickly and easily as possible.
  44.  
  45.     Please be aware that you can use the full power of the Diamond 
  46.         FIRE GL 2000/3000 only if the other components of your system, 
  47.         especially the graphic monitor that is being used, fully comply 
  48.         to the specifications for the Diamond FIRE GL 2000/3000.
  49.     (For example : You cannot use the 1280x1024 resolution that is 
  50.         supported by the FIRE GL 2000/3000 with a monitor supporting 
  51.         only resolutions up to 1024x768).
  52.     Dualscreen:
  53.     Please note that both monitors must support the resolution and the 
  54.         refresh rate that you want to specify. You cannot set different 
  55.         resolution values for your two monitors.
  56.  
  57. 1.2 System preparation
  58. ======================
  59.  
  60.     Follow these steps before beginning the installation procedure:
  61.  
  62.     1) If you are upgrading the graphics card in your system, return the 
  63.     display adapter settings back to 'Standard VGA', then remove the graphics
  64.     card to be replaced from your PC.
  65.  
  66.     2) Check the jumper settings on the card prior to installation in the PC.
  67.     Your board is shipped with the following jumper settings as seen from the front:
  68.  
  69.     1 2=3            = represents jumper present
  70.     1=2 3
  71.  
  72.     Refer to the online user's manual or printed documentation (if applicable) for 
  73.     a detailed description.
  74.  
  75.     3) Follow the hardware installation instructions provided with your card
  76.     before beginning the software installation.
  77.     
  78.     Note: The onboard legacy VGA adapter must be enabled during the installation
  79.     procedure. If you wish to disable the onboard VGA and use another VGA source 
  80.     via the loop-thru cable, follow the software installation procedure first.
  81.     Refer to the documentation for instructions on how to configure the FIRE GL 2000/3000
  82.     for loop-through operation.
  83.  
  84.     If you plan on installing Diamond Autocad productivity tools ( BigFocus and 3DWin ),
  85.     make sure that Autocad release 13 or higher is correctly installed first.

  87. 2. Installation
  88. ===============
  89.     The installation procedures described below refer to the 
  90.         installation from the Diamond Professional Line CD and Diamond 
  91.         SuperCD.
  92.  
  93.  2.1 Installation under Windows 95
  94. ===========================================
  95.  
  96.     Note: some versions of Windows95 delivered preinstalled on the hard disk 
  97.     of your computer may detect new graphics devices if the current display
  98.     adapter was not set to "Standard VGA" when the system was delivered. This
  99.     may also occur when the FIRE GL 2000/3000 is installed in an existing system
  100.     without returning the selected display driver to "Standard VGA" as recommended.
  101.     If the Win95 Hardware Wizard detects new graphics devices, and prompts
  102.     you for the location of graphics drivers for these devices, enter:
  103.  
  104.     <CD drive>:/DRIVERS
  105.  
  106.     and then continue with the installation. This may be required more than once.
  107.  
  108.     Otherwise, the system will start using the standard VGA driver.
  109.  
  110.         Select the Windows Start Menu and then 'Run'. Then enter:
  111.  
  112.         <CD drive>:START
  113.  
  114.  
  115.   Windows 95 Refresh Rates
  116.   -----------------------------------------------------
  117.   If your monitor is capable of displaying ergonomic refresh rates
  118.   at the resolution you have selected, but Windows95 is using a lower 
  119.   refresh rate, use the Windows95 device manager to check the following 
  120.   device properties:
  121.  
  122.   For the Fire GL 2000/3000, make sure that the device properties entry is set to 
  123.   maximum or the specific refresh rate required.
  124.  
  125.   For the monitor, make sure the device is set to reflect the monitor you are
  126.   using, or a similar type, and make sure the properties are set to allow
  127.   using the maximum allowable refresh rate.

  131. 2.2 Installing the Windows NT 3.5/4.0 Driver
  132.     ========================================
  133.     WinNT 3.51/4.0:
  134.  
  135.     From the Windows Program Manager select 'File', then 'Run'. Enter:
  136.  
  137.     <CD drive>:START
  138.  
  139.     For more information, please refer to your manual.
  140.  
  141. 2.3 Choosing a Monitor
  142. ======================
  143.     For using the full power of your Diamond FIRE GL 2000/3000 board, 
  144.         the graphics monitor you choose should be technically suitable 
  145.         for use with this board.
  146.     In Dualscreen mode, both monitors must support the same resolution 
  147.         and refresh rates. 
  148.     If you specify a single screen configuration,the driver software 
  149.         will automatically switch off the second monitor. 
  150.  
  151.     To select refreshrates in Windows NT click on the 'Display' icon 
  152.         in the 'Control Panel'.
  153.

  157.          *** IMPORTANT ***
  158.  
  159.     Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you specify 
  160.         settings that exceed the ratings specified for your monitor, 
  161.         you may permanently damage the monitor!
  162.     If you change the monitor, first check the ratings of the new 
  163.         monitor and, if necessary, reconfigure your settings accordingly!
  164.

  166. 3. Known Restrictions
  167. ======================
  168.     (1) 2 x VGA in one system
  169.     You cannot run more than one active VGA board in a PC.
  170.     If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you want to use
  171.     the FIRE GL 2000/3000, you must disable the VGA adapter in the
  172.     PC first.
  173.     Today, most computer systems will automatically select a VGA on the 
  174.         graphics board with priority.
  175.     However, if you prefer using the motherboard-VGA, disable the VGA 
  176.         on the Fire GL 2000/3000 and use the loop-thru cable to connect 
  177.         your VGA on the motherboard and the Fire GL 2000/3000 once the software
  178.     installation procedure has been completed.
  179.     Refer to your manual for more information. 
  180.  
  181.     (2) Boot problems
  182.     The Diamond Fire GL 2000/3000, as any other graphics board, uses 
  183.         a system interrupt. 
  184.     There may be problems because of other components in your system 
  185.         using the same interrupt, or fix-installed interrupts of the 
  186.         motherboard manufacturer - (booting problems).
  187.     Please install your graphics board into another PCI slot, or, 
  188.         in the boot-setup, change the IRQ-value of the PCI slot and then 
  189.         reboot the system.
  190.  
  191.     (3) Resolution 640x480
  192.     The resolution 640x480 is available with TrueColor (32bit) only.
  193.  
  194.     (4) HEIDI installation. 3D Studio MAX must be properly installed on your
  195.     system AND MUST HAVE BEEN STARTED AT LEAST ONE TIME before HEIDI can be
  196.     installed using the installation procedure.

  199. 3.1 Motherboard Compatibility
  200. ============================
  201.     The Diamond FIRE GL 2000/3000 is designed for motherboards supporting 
  202.         the PCI v.2.0 (or higher) standard. This standard supports and 
  203.     correctly initializes multi-function devices like the FIRE GL 
  204.         2000/3000.
  205.     If your motherboard BIOS does not correctly identify and initialize
  206.     your graphics adapter, the software drivers proivided with the card will not
  207.     function properly.
  208.     A system BIOS update on your motherboard, available from your
  209.     motherboard manufacturer or supplier, may remedy the problem. 
  210.     Alternatively, changing the setting in the check box entitled
  211.     "Use PCI BIOS addresses" ( part of the driver properties ) may 
  212.     rectify the problem.
  213.   
  214.     
  215. 4. Corrections to the Manual
  216. =============================
  217.     The Win95 drivers have been extended to include 3D specific property
  218.     settings similar to those included in the NT driver. If your printed
  219.     documentation does not contain a description of these new features, 
  220.     please refer to the online documentation file located on this CD.
  221.

  225.         Diamond graphic boards and multimedia products, as well as 
  226.         software updates,
